Cloud blocks

Cloud blocks show resource labels and properties in an infrastructure diagram. Draw a proposed setup or place resources that have already been imported.

Editing requires docs:write. The cost heatmap requires the Business plan or above and cloud:read. Refreshing costs also requires cloud:manage.

Place a resource or container

  1. Select + in the left canvas toolbar, then Cloud.
  2. In Cloud resources, keep the Kinds tab selected and search for a resource, such as S3 Bucket or Lambda Function.
  3. Choose the kind, then place it on the canvas.
  4. Double-click the block to change its label.

You can also insert resources through the insert palette (Shift+N), under Cloud Resources or Cloud Containers. Drawing these blocks doesn't require a cloud connection and doesn't create resources in your cloud account.

Show properties on a resource

Double-click a resource and choose Tile for an icon and label, or Card to show properties. In Card mode, select Add property and fill in Key and Value.

For example, give a proposed queue the Key consumer and the Value Dispatch Service. Property values are plain text on the block. Select Link to catalog object if the block should point to an existing object instead.

Draw a boundary

Under Containers in the cloud palette, choose a boundary such as Account, Region, VPC or Subnet. Containers also include cluster, namespace and security group boundaries.

Resize the boundary around its contents. Double-click it to change the label or use Tidy container layout to arrange its direct children.

Add imported resources

Open the Imported tab in Cloud resources to find resources from cloud import. Filter by name or tags, then select a resource to add an object-linked block to the document. Use the button below the matches to add matching resources together. A diagram cap can omit some matches; a notice reports how many were added and omitted.

Cloud import requires the Business plan or above. A block placed from Kinds is a drawing until you link it to an object; a block added from Imported already has that link.

Read the cost heatmap

For a document with imported AWS resources, select the Toggle cost heatmap icon to show costs over linked resource blocks and object references. The icon appears when the document has cost data or a backing cloud connection that can be refreshed.

Read the legend's As of: date before using the amounts. Estimated: counts objects with estimated costs, and No data means the resource has no cost data, not that it's free. Select Refresh costs to request updated costs for the backing connections.
