Decisions

Record a decision when the diagram shows what you built but leaves the choice unexplained. Keep the alternatives and consequences with the documents and objects they affect.

Reading decisions requires docs:read; recording, editing, linking and changing their status requires docs:write.

Record a decision

  1. Open Decisions in the sidebar and select New decision.
  2. Enter a Title, choose a Space or No space, and check the Decision date.
  3. Write the Context and Considered options. Record the trade-offs for each option and mark the selected one Chosen.
  4. Fill in Decision outcome and Consequences, then select Record decision.

For example, a decision at Lanefold, a fictional freight company, could explain why Dispatch Service calls Billing Service asynchronously, with the cost of that approach recorded under its option.

New decisions start as Proposed. Selecting Chosen on an option doesn't accept the decision. Use Change status on the saved record.

Change status

The status menu offers these transitions:

Current statusAvailable next status
ProposedAccepted, Rejected or Deprecated
AcceptedDeprecated
RejectedProposed
DeprecatedAccepted

Superseded requires a replacement record, so it has a separate action below.

  1. In Linked records, select Edit links.
  2. Search for the objects and documents the decision affects. Check the records to include, or uncheck a record to remove its link.
  3. Select Save links.

Linked decisions appear in the object's Decisions tab, with superseded decisions hidden by default. A space's Decisions tab lists decisions assigned to that space. Assigning a space and linking a document are separate choices.

Replace a decision

Create the replacement record first. On the old record, select Supersede with..., choose the replacement, then select Supersede decision. The old record becomes Superseded, and the records link to each other.

A replacement can directly replace only one decision. A link that would create a cycle is rejected.

To undo the replacement, select Remove supersede link, then Remove link. The old record returns to Accepted, regardless of its status before it was superseded.
