Export and templates

A diagram download gives you a file for a review or another document. Save a template for a drawing you'll reuse, or extract a selection when part of the canvas needs its own document.

Downloading requires docs:read. Saving a template requires templates:manage. Extracting a selection requires docs:write.

Download a diagram

  1. Select Download diagram in the editor toolbar.
  2. Under Download as, choose SVG (vector), PNG (2000px) or PDF.

The download uses the editor's current light or dark theme and exports the document, not just your selection. For editable diagram text, use Mermaid or YAML.

Save the canvas as a template

  1. Select Save as template in the toolbar.
  2. Enter Template name and, optionally, Description.
  3. Select Create template.
  4. In Define variables, review the variable definitions, then select Save definitions.

Saving a template captures the whole canvas, including elements outside the selection. Before saving, check that the canvas holds only what the template should start with.

Extract a selection to a document

  1. Select at least two elements.
  2. Select Create Architecture Doc From Elements in the selection toolbar.
  3. Enter Name and select Create.

The new document contains the selected elements, including their bound text and the contents of selected frames. In the original document, those elements are replaced by a reference to the new document.

Turn on Embed for the new reference if you want to keep seeing its diagram on the original canvas.
